UC Riverside Leaf Blower Study, 2006
Often cited by the industry as proof that a broom resuspends particulate matter as effectively as a blower (not true), this is nevertheless the only scientific study (before the Edmunds exhaust emissions study of 2011) that proves how settled dust and PM is entrained back into the air we breathe.
Among the many criticisms of the study is the choice of an underpowered, 25cc engine backpack blower (PB-261) sold by Echo at Home Depot. The authors should have known (or did they in fact know?) that mow-and-blow crews always buy the commercial backpack blowers. Theses models are far more powerful- engine size 140% larger, and airspeed and air volume almost double that of the test unit. If you want to find out what debris blowers do to settled dust, then rund a test with a real-world debris blower- such as the ubiquitous Echo PB-770.
